Baby product reviews

I love writing reviews about baby products so I decided it was high time to check out the best of the best high tech and generally the best baby swings / baby rockers / baby bouncer chairs / rain boots.  With winter approaching I wanted to find some cute rain boots for my daughter.  My daughter spends lots of time splashing around and playing in the mud but that doesn’t mean that she can’t look as cute as possible in her little rain boots.  I found several cute pairs here –

Best baby swing

Most moms (including myself until recently) assume that a baby bouncer, baby rocker / baby swing come in fairly standard formats: they either bounce up and down or swing backwards and forwards. Wrong. There exists an extremely innovative product from the wonderful people at 4moms called the MamaRoo. I actually got given the MamaRoo as a present in March and my 3 month old has literally taken to it like a duck to water :)

Anyway, the core principle behind the MamaRoo is very simple, it aims to replicate the instinctive and natural movement of a mom cradling and soothing their baby. Babies love to bounce and sway and that’s exactly what the Mamaroo does. Think about it, parents don’t vibrate like a baby bouncer or swing like a baby rocker do they?

The primary feature of the 4moms MamaRoo infant seat is its unique set of natural motions. The seat allows you to choose five unique motions to suit the preference or current mood of your baby.

The five MamaRoo motions

Car Ride

This sweeping lateral motion follows the path of a figure of eight on its side

This setting focuses mainly on bouncy up-and-down motions, with less side-to-side

Tree Swing

This motion sweeps side-to-side, high on the sides and low on the middle

This motion is essentially an inversion of the Tree Swing and is low on the sides and high on the front

Ocean Wave

This motion sweeps around in a large circle as if rolling on the ocean waves

All of these motions are controlled via a simple LCD display on the pedestal of the baby chair.

I personally find that the Car Ride works best with my youngest when I’m trying to quieten him down ready for sleep. He will quite often drift off very quickly when swinging to this motion. It’s certainly beats having to drive around in the middle of the night with a colicky baby!!! When it’s play time Adam loves the Kangaroo on a fast setting. You can really see his face lighten up :) Different babies in different moods will obviously respond better to different motions and speeds, but that of course is the luxury of having such a versatile and easily adjustable baby chair. Having just mentioned the speed of the MamaRoo, I suppose I’d better explain some more about this feature. Each of the five motion settings comes with five different speed settings. These are also controlled at the base of the pedestal by the LCD display. This gives another dimension of control that really helps get the environment just perfect for your baby.

This diverse range of motion with the MamaRoo is even said to help develop the inner-ear (the balance center of the brain) of babies, and can shorten the time it takes to get them up on their feet. Seems to make sense, but I’m yet to see evidence of this of course…

Noise machine soother + iPod dock

As if that’s not enough, the MamaRoo also has a built in noise machine to help soothe your baby. It comes with five different sounds from nature. If your little one’s in the mood for something a little more rocking, then there’s even an MP3 player docking station which sits behind the LCD screen. I can generate instant smiles when this is in action with the fast KangaRoo motion setting!

Plush ball mobile

Beyond motion and sound, the MamaRoo infant seat comes with some added visual stimulation. Dangling above the cradle are three really cool squidgy plush toy balls classically decorated in the style of Van Gogh, Monet, and Seurat. Black and white on one side for infants. Color on the other side for older babies (they come into their own at about four months when color vision begins to develop). They easily pop in and out of the mobile so babies can chew and or study them.

Cradle design

Moving up to the cradle itself, It can come in a range of 6 cool color schemes (red+charcoal / orange+charcoal / green+chocolate / pink+chocolate / silver+charcoal or all black) and the machine washable fabric is easily removable. The cradle of this baby seat is fully reclineable along its axis which helps you to easily position your little one for either chill out time or play time. The whole cradle is very comfortable and your baby will fit snugly in with the soft fastener.

How much should you expect to pay for the MamaRoo?

The MamaRoo commonly retails for anywhere between $210 to $260 (still a bargain in my opinion) but you really shouldn’t be paying any more than $200 for this baby chair. The cheapest we have seen it is on Amazon who consistently sell the MamaRoo for under $200.

Does the MamaRoo include a Warranty?

Yes, the 4moms MamaRoo infant seat does indeed include a 6 month warranty

All in all, I would say that this absolutely is one of the best baby products I own. It has to be one of the best baby rocker units on the market. Not only is it clever and packed full of such brilliant features, it just looks so damned cool. When I look at Adam I often think he looks like a little intergalactic super hero in his training pod! Haha :) Seriously though, while there are plenty of other baby rockers / baby swings / baby bouncers out there, none I’ve ever seen have two axis’s of motion that imitate real life human movements. The movement and comfort of MamaRoo is without a doubt capable of sending baby Adam to sleep in no time at all. Though I was initially concerned that the motor noise would be distracting for him (It’s not that loud but definitely audible), he didn’t seem to mind at all. If you’re looking for something to give yourself a break from the little one, this is definitely the product for you.

What Others Are Saying

This 4moms MamaRoo infant seat has received rave reviews from most consumers on the net with an average of 4.5 out of 5 from most reviewers on Amazon and the 4moms website itself.

Here are some of the comments to date:

MUCH MUCH Better than Graco Sweatpeace Infant Swing
Wouldn’t Buy Anything Else
Great product!
My husband and I LOVE this swing
This is the most incredible invention!
Any complaints?

I found very few complaints for this baby seat on consumer sites around the internet. One consumer did express concern that although it is quiet the motor is certainly noticeable. However, from personal experience, and from what I’ve read, the motor does not seem to bother infants in any way whatsoever: which I guess is what really matters!
